(2014) In 2013 I climbed Mt. Vesuvius in Naples, Italy as well as explored the ruins of Pompeii, seeing remnants of a city obliterated by a mere sneeze of Nature. It was an amazing and humbling experience and it put into perspective just how at mercy we are to the power of the earth.

I was also fascinated to learn about the supervolcano under Yellowstone (Wyoming, USA) and its potential for a supereruption, which *would* produce widespread and devastating results. I also learned about the nature of a “caldera”, a cauldron-like volcanic feature usually formed by the collapse of land following a volcanic eruption.

So I anthropomorphized the idea that Death (unseen truth) lies dormant beneath the surface of the earth in the form of a chaos magician (seen fiction). By definition, chaos magic is often highly individualistic and borrows liberally from other belief systems with a core tenet that belief itself is a tool.

Caldera’s waves of hair communicate the sedimentary layers of earth with a chaos star at the heart of tectonic pressure. The steampunk hat gives a nod toward the Industrial Revolution and the tartan accessory pays homage to my personal roots.
