(2021) "Cardinal Sins" (20" x 20") is the 7th drawing in the Nature Reclamation Series with a dark / light composition split representing the cruelty and kindness of nature. This piece offers several paths to interpretation:
THE DARK: High ranking Catholic figures are called cardinals and wear deep red robes and a special ring. One could see the bird as the sinner since he is poisoning the cardinal's wine, or one could see that the unseen cardinal has sinned and the bird is simply delivering a version of Nature's justice.
THE LIGHT: Native American cultures believe that cardinals are children of the sun and if you see a cardinal flying towards the sun you will have good luck. It is also believed that these creatures have strong ties to their ancestors, and are the messengers of the Great Spirit. There is an old American folklore saying that when a cardinal appears in your yard, it’s a visitor from heaven.
